Coming together for a good cause at Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

A remarkable effort as residents give back

September 2, 2025

Esperance residents were out in force for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on May 21, helping raise much-needed funds for cancer research.

The annual Cancer Council event always attracts a good crowd, and this year was no exception. Around 75 residents attended and helped raise $3260.60 for the cause.

Organised by Suzanne Doughty and Lyn Sommerville, the event included a lively auction, with items generously donated by local businesses. Among the goodies up for grabs were hampers, vouchers, beauty treatments, and even a show-stopping five-night stay at the Intercontinental Hotel in Vanuatu.

There was also a raffle, with prizes such as wine and chocolates donated by Esperance residents. Reside staff provided free tea and coffee and residents all brought a plate of food to share, creating a delicious spread.

Suzanne, who lost both parents to cancer, said she was overwhelmed by the support.

“There was a lot of fun and laughter had by everyone, it really brought the whole community together,” she said.

“If people didn’t like their raffle prizes they just swapped with a neighbour, which created a lovely sense of camraderie.”

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raises money for cancer research, prevention, and support services across Australia.

It’s a powerful and simple way for everyday Australians to make a difference, by doing something as easy (and enjoyable) as sharing a cuppa and a slice of cake.

Lyn said the event was a heartfelt success.

“Cancer touches so many lives, and it was just wonderful to see everyone show up, pitch in, and support each other for such an important cause," she said.

Esperance Hope Island Village Manager Haley Seymour praised the effort and generosity on display.

“Events like this speak volumes about the spirit of the Esperance community,” she said.

“To raise over $3,000 from a morning tea is a remarkable effort, and it shows how passionate our residents are about giving back.

“It’s a great example of how a simple act – sharing a cuppa and a conversation – can make a big difference.”
